What happens when sounds from the past touch the present?
Resonaciones begins by awakening the sounds and frequencies made by whistling vessels from the Andean Moche culture, held at the Linden Museum. They are brought to life by the artists Nicole L’Huillier and Francisca Gili, under the guidance of the Mochica healer and cultural activist Karen Urcia. Through processes of listening and the sensory reception of these sounds, and of transformation and imagination, the ifa Gallery becomes an immersive soundscape. The centuries-old technology of the whistling vessels, with their ability to communicate with non-human life forms is combined with today’s technologies – including artificial intelligence.
The space is activated by a living and permanently changing soundscape that is guided by a system of artificial intelligence: sounds are imagined, integrated, and transmitted, leading to ever-evolving sound experiences and the construction of a dynamic open archive. These are signals from different times and different essences – the sounds of centuries-old whistling vessels, the oscillations of earthquakes and water that flows meanderingly through the channels, and voices and sounds that come from visitors. Our understanding of time and existence becomes dynamic as something that exists in mutual influence and thus in a state of becoming-with. Reciprocity is the basis of all being and is nourished by the practice of ayni (Quechua: reciprocity) – the co-existence of giving and receiving.
