Foundation 1 (Pétalo Trio)
2025
Foundation 1 consists of three Pétalos (Petals)—sculptural improvisatory instruments with elastic membrane microphones. Each Pétalo receives sounds around it and processes them in a particular way, so each one has a characteristic sonic signature. Together, they arrange a sound field that lays the foundations for a dynamic invisible architecture shaped by the constant jam session of the Pétalos and their sonic environment. They activate a relational system of sonic exchange in a perpetual geometry of sending and receiving, an improvisational space of listening and responding.
Mounted on wheels, the Pétalos (Petals) move through the space in a choreographic procession at specific moments each day, activating a system of mobile vibrational architecture. As they move, they engage with the building’s acoustics and the sounds of neighboring works. They also respond to the activity of people around them, constantly reconfiguring their relational field. They form a composition of a vibrational society in motion, shaped by resonances, interferences, and shared presence. Each movement breaks and reforms the ensemble, inviting unfixed configurations and the creation of shapeshifting sonic shelters. The sound is projected to the floor, activating the building and rooting as a way of consolidating a foundation of sound as the structural pillar for this system.
This piece was originally created for Situations 💕, a collective exhibition project that was part of the Darmstadt Summer Courses 2025. Organized by the International Music Institute Darmstadt in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Darmstadt.
