GIPpy – AA Visiting School

BRIEF: The 2015 AA Visiting School to Santiago will investigate the archaeology of technology contained within a series of Soviet astronomical equipment and buildings held in Chile’s National Astronomical Observatory. Produced early in the 1960s, the AA Visiting School will critically approach the GIPpy telescope and dome (Grand Passage Instrument) that was built by the renowned LOMO factory within the workshops of the Pulkovo Observatory in Saint Petersburg, but stopped to be used after the soviet astronomical mission’s departure from Chile following the 1973 military coup d’etat.

This is not an interactive museum, it is a live one. Where every single piece of the collection is a living object with functions and specific mechanisms that still work. So this is a project that amplifies the “living” quality of the exhibition pieces, a museum that shows the value of everything working and invading the space with their movements and sounds.
